Goldman in the News

The Case of William Hallowell

In 2008, Goldman defended William "Billy" Hallowell, who was accused of writing a threatening email and including bizarre sexual imagery to his boss, who was the head librarian at a posh prep school in Riverdale. When the police showed up at Billy's home, he showed them that the e-mail did not come from his e-mail account. In fact, the address on the e-mail was different from Billy's. Ignoring the evidence that all pointed to someone else, the police arrested him anyway. Thus began Billy's nightmare in the criminal justice system.

After getting the criminal case dismissed, Goldman brought suit in federal court for false arrest against the City of New York and the NYPD. The case gained significant regional and national media attention. In 2008, it was featured in the New York Times on July 10, 2008 and on November 20, 2008, in the New York Post on July 10, 2008 and on November 21, 2008, and in the New York Daily News on July 9, 2008 and on November 21, 2008. Articles about the case can also be found in The Gothamist and New York Magazine, and on national radio 1010 WINS.

The case also received television coverage on Channel 12 Westchester.
